Libraries are a place of discovery, and systems like Calgary Public Library offer the tools and resources for people of all ages to learn more about themselves. “This is Me” — the 2024 National Child Day theme — aligns perfectly with the work libraries are doing in the community.
American Author Sims Bishop uses mirrors, windows, and doors as a metaphor to describe the relationship we have with books and literature.
Books are mirrors when readers see their own lives reflected in the pages. Books are windows when readers get a view of experiences and stories that are different from their own. Books become sliding glass doors when readers feel transported into the world of the story and when they feel empathy for the characters. Together, these things can help us learn more about ourselves.
The Importance of Having the Freedom to Read
Having access to literature is an integral part of self-discovery. The freedom to discover more about who we are can be connected to our freedom to read. Every year, there are demands to censor or ban library books and resources across North America.
When we look at children’s literature that has previously been banned, they are often stories of characters who have overcome setbacks or obstacles to be true to who they are. This includes Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret by Judy Blume, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling, and The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch.
Libraries have a responsibility to provide access to these stories, as they can help us feel connected to ourselves. As they turn the pages of these books, young readers can see glimpses of their own lives and have a better understanding of who they are.
Beyond the Books
Libraries are more than just books on shelves. They are places of community connection and growth.
At Calgary Public Library, there are many programs and services for kids of all ages. There’s a chance to discover that you have a passion for creative writing at the Teen Writing Café, or you can challenge your scientific side and learn something new at the Kids in STEM program, and so much more. It’s these accessible opportunities that help children find their interests and who they are.
At the Library, we welcome everyone and are excited to help you learn more about yourself along the way.
